Today, we can relax and enjoy the results of what happens when friends love beer so much that they not only make their own, but they also build a brewery on it. Lincoln & South is different in every way from the earlier versions of the brewing industry. In fact, Lincoln & South doesn’t approach it as an industry at all. Still, the differences uncover some things worth knowing.

To start with, a father and son in Vermont – the Napa Valley of craft beers and a place known for the independent spirit that people there take pride in – decided they could make beer better.

They proved it, and they attracted a team of craft beer pros who are just as dedicated as they are. They decided to bring that beer to their favorite warmer climate, Hilton Head Island.

What’s the Difference?

Fathers and sons were all over the beer makers of long ago. August Joseph Busch kept naming sons the same, in fact, for four generations – until the most recent one saw Anheuser-Busch go to a global conglomerate. Today, 15 Anheuser-Busch breweries are outside the U.S., and 14 of those are in China. Inheritance worked out well, if size was the objective.

The four Griesedieck Brothers, in the same hometown of St. Louis, also descended from a brewing family. Yet, the family recipe and methods were less important to the company’s story than their location – at the corner of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Transportation, a huge footprint that reached through the growing American West, was the not-so-secret ingredient, even in these family breweries.

Where You Can See It

The roots of Lincoln & South are different. Vermont is rolling and mountainous. Like Bavaria, where you can see towns from church steeple to church steeple, most towns in Vermont are not much farther apart than a bike ride, and not much bigger than the cluster around a crossroads. Yet each one is happy to be just a little different, as there’s not much desire to fit in with everybody. You can hear it, too, in the talk. When a Vermonter is through with a word, he lets it drop right quick.

There might be a little bit of destiny built in, when a passionate brewing team from Vermont discovers the defiant independence of South Carolina. Blend in the beauty and subtropical pace of the sea islands, and you have a heritage ready to happen.
